Science-Based Targets Initiative

Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi)

DB Group will be climate-neutral by 2040 and has committed to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across the entire value chain by 2040. This target was reviewed by the renowned Science Based Target initiative (SBTi) and confirmed in spring 2025.

In its decarbonization strategy, DB Group adheres to the SBTi's science-based net zero standard and thus follows a 1.5°C pathway, to which the Group already committed to in 2022.

The SBTi's Net Zero Standard is the world's leading framework for setting science-based climate protection targets for companies. According to this standard, DB Group's emissions (Scope 1-3) must be reduced by at least 90 % by 2040 compared to the base year 2019. The remaining emissions of a maximum of 10 % will be neutralized - i.e. permanently removed from the atmosphere and permanently bound.

SBTi promotes science-based protection targets

The SBTi is a joint initiative of the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). Its aim is to promote science-based climate protection targets in companies. Both the sector and the size of a company are taken into account in order to calculate the individual contribution required to achieve the Paris climate protection target.
